Wycombe Wanderers FC, by far the greatest team in the whole entire world.

Wycombe Wanderers. A Brief League History.

In The League

A league club since 1993,  (formed in 1887) promoted from the Vauxhall Conference. Wycombe missed out by 1 goal in the 1991/92 season to Colchester United which has lead to one of the most unusual rivalries in football as they are situated over 100 kilometers (or 70 miles) apart. The 1991/92 season was bad tempered affair and with only one promotion place being available, it was a blow for the club to have missed out although it was obviously rited the season after. Wycombe gained immediate promotion to division 2 (now league 1) in the 93/94 season via the playoffs leading to 10 years in that league.

These promotions were all under the leadership of current Aston Villa (and ex Celtic, Leciester and Norwich) manager Martin O'Neill who is considered the greatest manager in the clubs history.

Wycombe only just survived relegation in the 98/99 season when Paul Emblem scored in the 84th minute to stop the side getting relegated. Lawrie Sanchez was taken on as manager in the February of that year. He lead the club to moderate success, keeping the club up in successive years although his mangerial skills were questioned at the end of his reign when his decision to primarily buy non league players contributed to the downfall of the club. Sanchez became Northern Ireland manager reigning over there most successful period since the 80's with wins over England 1-0 (D. Healy) and Spain 3-2 (Healy Hatrick (3 goals)). After that he had a spell at Fulham which lasted less than a year.

Relegation happened in the 2003/2004 season under the incompetent Tony Adams (now Portsmouth manager). They are still in League 2 having made the playoffs under John Gorman and Paul Lambert, failing at the semi final stage each time. Wycombe currently reside first in league 2, under the management of Peter Taylor, having been undefeated in there first 18 games (losing to Aldershot 3-2 in the 19th game) just falling short of  a club record 21 under John Gorman in the 2005/06 season.

Cup Success

Wycombe have had unusual success in cup competitions in the 21st century reaching both the semi finals in the FA Cup (2001) and League Cup (2006).

Wycombe defeated Millwall, Grimsby and Wolvehampton Wanderers to reach the 4th round of the FA Cup for the first time. In the 4th round Wycombe faced Wimbledon (who transformed into MK Dons). The first game finished a draw at wimbledons Selhearst Park so a replay occured at Adams Park. The game finished 1-1 all at 90 minutes and 2-2 at  the end of extra time with Wycombe scoring in the last 10 minutes of  both time periods to secure a draw. Penalties went 8-8 when Wycombe goalkeeper saved and got up to score the winning penalty to win the game 9-8.

This lead to a 5th round or quarter final appearance against Leciester City, then of the premiership. Wycombe who were hampered by both injury problems and suspension problems were forced to advertise for strikers on Ceefax, leading to the fairytale story of Roy Essendoh who in all truth was an absolutely awful striker scoring only once in 11 appearances for the club. Wycombe went ahead in the game only for Leciester to equalise. Wycombe were denied a penalty when Stefan Oakes (A Wycombe player for 3 seasons after) handled in the area. This caused an insensed sanchez to get sent off, only to see essendoh score his one and only goal for the club, rising above Matt Elliott to header past Kasey Keller and triumphedly put Wycombe through. The only damper on the situation was the red card for Wycombe captain and legend steve "brownie" Brown who got a second yellow card for removing his shirt in support of his 15 month old son who suffers from a rare disease. However two happy occurances happened, Brown was abale to see the ban off and appear in the semi final and Maxwell is still fit and healthy.

The Semi Final at Villa Park was against the giant Liverpool. Wycombe kept liverpool at bay until the 79th minute when Emile Heskey scored from a corner having injured keeper Taylor at the previous corner. He then dived to get a freekick that Robbie Fowler expertly put away in the 81st minute. Wycombe weren't finished with Keith Ryan scoring in the 89th minute creating a mad scramble at the end of the game. Wycombe lost but gained alot of support and even more respect from the footballing world.

League Cup.

In 2006 Wycombe succeeded in reaching the semi finals of the league cup, defeating premiership Fulham and Charlton along the way.

However the big game was in the semi-final when wycombe played billionaire chelsea, the side who won the premiership that season and the season before. The entire Wycombe squad was not worth one of the starting 11 against chelsea and yet a Tommy Mooney flick on was latched onto by jermaine Easter who put the ball past Cudicini equalising for the mighty blues. The game finished 1-1, a huge coo for the club. The second leg was an easy 4-0 win for chelsea however it did not take much of the shine off the first leg.

Tragedy

Wycombe Wanderers lost two people in 2005.

Myra Gorman, the wife of then Wycombe manager John died after a long battle with cancer. Rip

Mark Philo. Skillful midfielder who was unlucky in his career with two leg breaks in 2003 and 2004 seasons. Was nearly recovered when he went partying in Reading (a local town), decided to drive home after drinking and killed himself and 2 of his friends. Tragically he hit a car with Grandmother and two grandchildren who also passed in the incident. All will be missed. RIP.
